Billy's goats: From five to 25

Before Billy’s family received goats from World Vision, their life in Masangano, Zambia wasn’t just tough, it was miserable. Loaded with debt due to rampant unemployment and a poor harvest caused by drought in 2018, the family of five was lucky to eat once a day—if at all. 

Hope finally arrived when Billy’s family received five goats from a World Vision donor. With careful nurturing, their small herd multiplied to 25 goats, enabling them to harvest a record 250 bags of maize thanks to the goat manure that fertilized their fields.

Empowered by their change in fortune, Billy’s parents made the bold decision to open a new business selling pesticides while maintaining their busy farm. As successful business owners, they now have the means to send all three children to school and eat regular meals every day. 

Today, Billy relishes going to school with his siblings, loves math and dreams of becoming a policeman one day. Thanks to goats, Billy’s not just free to enjoy his childhood, but to reach for a better future too.

Why donate animals?

Bees

The sustainable solution for families facing climate change and environmental degradation. Not only do bees provide a stable source of food and income, they also: 

  • Produce nutritious honey, propolis, beeswax and royal jelly that are high in demand and can be sold in markets.

  • Help boost immune systems through their honey.

  • Pollinate plants for a larger yield of fruits and vegetables.

Hens & Roosters

A coop of hens and roosters can be a lifeline for families facing chronic hunger:

  • Chickens lay an average of 250 eggs per year, providing families with a steady source of nutritious food.

  • Over time, surplus eggs and chicks can be sold or shared with other families.

  • Fruits and vegetables grown in a garden fertilized by chicken manure can be eaten or sold at the market.

Alpacas

Known for their friendly faces and sweet nature, alpacas can also produce more than four kilograms of luxurious wool per year, meaning:

  • Families have a sustainable way to make a living.

  • Families can produce items like blankets, clothing and accessories that they can use or sell at the market.

  • Income earned by selling alpaca wool products can be used to buy food and other necessities.
