Promises delivered: full plates and zero drop-out rate

Food insecurity driven by extreme poverty in Muyinga, Burundi meant that most families were lucky to eat once a day—if at all. Too hungry to focus, students began dropping out of school, alarming the community.

World Vision joined forces with the World Food Programme, local schools and their communities to cook lunch daily for 1,500 students across the district in a bid to lower the drop-out rate.

Today, classrooms are full and the drop-out rate is zero.

An ambitious project with spectacular results, this was a huge win for all citizens of Muyinga—especially for students like Emelyne who was on the verge of dropping out with her classmates.

“As we have lunches at school, I feel at ease while learning,” Emelyne explains. “This encourages me to go on with my studies.”

With a belly full of nutritious food, Emelyne’s free to enjoy the rest of her student days and dream about a brighter future ahead.

Why World Vision?

Our mission
We’re on a mission to help families and communities break through poverty—for good. How? By being laser-focused on three areas: disaster relief, transformational development and advocacy.

Our approach
We stand by the belief that if we have the means to help, we have the responsibility to act. Our Christian faith inspires us to serve all people—no matter their religion, race, colour, gender identity, sexual orientation or other status.

We don’t just provide short-term fixes like delivering food, clean water, providing healthcare and education. We also collaborate and partner with local leaders to address the root causes behind the challenges they face and find sustainable solutions to overcome them.

Our impact
In 2023, we reached over 16.5 million girls, boys and adults through 280 programs, helping them and their communities gain independence. The impact we’ve had in the lives of the world’s most vulnerable girls and boys is one of the reasons we’re rated among the top 10 international impact charities in Canada year after year.
