Habiba, a teenage girl from Somalia, is drinking a cup of tea outside her home. (Somalia, 2023).

Harvesting hope – Habiba’s story

Habiba was just five-years old when she lived through her first drought in 2011. She still remembers the devastation her family of 13 endured when they lost all their livestock.

The drought of 2022 was more bearable, thanks to support from World Vision.

Her family received a card that enabled them to purchase food and other necessities for six months. While grateful for the support, Habiba’s family also needed a lasting solution that would help them build a better future.

Hope sprouted when Habiba’s mother received a small plot of land, seeds and agricultural training courtesy of World Vision and the World Food Programme. Equipped with new skills, she now grows watermelon and fodder, a type of plant feed for animals, boosting their family’s savings by selling them at the market.

Inspired by her mother’s example, Habiba’s now focused what lies ahead: returning to school, completing her education and becoming a bank teller, her dream job. With newfound stability in her life, she’s not just free to envision a better future for herself and her family—it’s now fully within her grasp.

Why World Vision?

Our mission

We’re on a mission to help families and communities break through poverty—for good. How? By being laser-focused on three areas: disaster relief, transformational development and advocacy,

Our approach

We stand by the belief that if we have the means to help, we have the responsibility to act. Our Christian faith inspires us to serve all people—no matter their religion, race, colour, gender identity, sexual orientation or other status.

We don’t just provide short-term fixes like delivering food, clean water, providing healthcare and education. We also collaborate and partner with local leaders to address the root causes behind the challenges they face and find sustainable solutions to overcome them.

Our impact

In 2023, we reached over 16.5 million girls, boys and adults through 280 programs, helping them and their communities gain independence. The impact we’ve had in the lives of the world’s most vulnerable girls and boys is one of the reasons we’re rated among the top 10 international impact charities in Canada year after year.
