Program spotlight: Equality for Girls Access to Learning (EGAL)

The challenge

In 2016, the Kasai Region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) experienced political unrest, causing massive population movements and displacement.

As a result, many areas now lack essential social infrastructures such as hospitals, markets and schools.

Ensuring children's education became a challenge, and even more so for girls as local customs favoured domestic activities over pursing education.

The solution

In 2020, World Vision partnered up with Global Affairs Canada, Make Music Matter (MMM) and local administrations to implement the Equality for Girls Access to Learning (EGAL) project in the DRC.

The project aims to enhance girls' agency, increase their resilience in fragile contexts and improve their independent decision-making power. We offer inclusive, gender-transformative quality education in Dibaya and Kanaga, Kasai Central.

The impact

In the past 3 years, we’ve invested in the futures of young girls by:

  • Increasing community and household awareness of the rights to education, protection, and decision-making for girls and young women.

  • Addressing barriers to girls' education by improving sanitation, providing hygiene kits, and promoting health education through school hygiene clubs.

  • Supporting local education stakeholders in developing and implementing safe, inclusive, school improvement plans.
