Program spotlight: Sorsogon Area Program

The challenge

The Sorsogon community is home to more than 90,000 people, almost half of whom are children. They face significant challenges in:

  • Education: A lack of value for schooling has led to high dropout rates, with only half of high school students completing their education.

  • Healthcare: Parents struggle to provide regular, healthy meals, especially when they don't earn enough money. Limited health education also hinders vaccination efforts and access to prenatal services.

  • Water and sanitation: Inadequate waste facilities and poor hygiene practices are leading to an unsanitary environment. Almost half of homes lack access to clean drinking water, and over a quarter do not have sanitary toilets.

  • Economic development: Low levels of education, a lack of skills training, and limited business opportunities restrict the employment of many women and out-of-school youth. In addition, illegal fishing practices have damaged marine life and reduced family incomes.

The solution

World Vision is working with community leaders and local staff to improve:

  • Education: We partner with community members and parents to promote children’s access to life skills and quality education.

  • Health Care: We provide education on proper nutrition practices and promote balanced diets to prevent child malnutrition.

  • Water and Sanitation: We increase the awareness of parents or caregivers about proper hygiene and sanitation practices.

  • Economic Development: We educate families about protecting marine resources and preventing illegal activities. We train parents and caregivers in alternative income-generating activities entrepreneurship opportunities.

The impact

  • 2,744 people were actively involved in savings groups, providing them with financial literacy training and access to small loans.

  • 2,309 children received school supplies and resources for their education including books, backpacks, uniforms and bicycles.

  • 1,634 youth participated in life skills training through World Vision programs.

  • 67 caregivers and teachers were trained to better support children's learning and reading.
