Feed a child. Fuel a childhood

We're fighting to put an end to food insecurity and malnutrition. We have fed 2.8 million bellies each year and continue to transform tummy aches into burps!

Poor nutrition and hunger are responsible for the deaths of 3.1 million children per year

The challenge

We have seen an increase of almost 200 million people facing severe hunger compared to early 2020. If current trends continue, 575 million people will still be living in extreme poverty in 2030.

In countries like Canada, people are negatively impacted by the cost of healthy, nutritious meals and food prices. But for people living in fragile contexts, hunger and food insecurity issues compound an already difficult situation.

The World Food Programme estimates that 70 percent of the world’s people faced with hunger live in areas afflicted by war and violence, both of which have significantly increased as of late. For example, Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of wheat, a product so heavily relied on by people in fragile countries like Somalia, and they are at war.

The solution

Our response to addressing this catastrophe came with our largest-ever appeal. In May 2022, we invested more than US$223 million in nutrition-specific programs. As part of our Global Hunger Response, and in partnership with the World Food Programme, we are increasing our investment to US$2.5 billion to reach 30 million people living in 28 of the world's most affected countries.

Because these crisis levels of hunger come with other complex issues, our response has been multi-sectoral, focused on:

  • Providing emergency food to directly address hunger and price shocks.
  • Improving families’ access to food.
  • Providing clean water.
  • Ensuring access to nutrition and health services.
  • Keeping the most vulnerable safe.
  • Strengthening people’s resilience to food insecurity and livelihood-related shocks.

In partnership with the UN World Food Programme, between 2019 – 2021, we prevented the deaths of 10,841 girls and boys under the age of five.

Fueling childhood – burping in fullness!

Our investments in the hunger crisis have focused on the most fragile countries including Somalia, Niger, Mali, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
